Anti-Corruption Corruption (ACC) has held an official ceremony to mark the National Anti-Corruption Day 2017 on 20th April 2017. Auditor General Mr. Hassan Ziyath was the chief guest of the ceremony held in ACC’s Conference Room. National Anti-Corruption Day is marked annually on 20th April.
Speaking in the ceremony Auditor General Mr. Hassan Ziyath said the current laws and regulations has to be amended to provide ACC with the legal mandate to investigate cases of illicit enrichment. He highlighted that everyone has to work collaboratively to combat corruption in Maldives. Mr. Ziyath also said that countries do not only become corrupt due to bad and immoral people but also because the well-educated are unwilling to perform their duties to society.
In the ceremony Chairman of ACC Mr. Hassan Luthfee delivered his remarks on behalf of ACC. He noted that investigators in ACC work with full independence and their work will not be clouded with undue influence. He praised the staff of ACC highlighting that the best quality he sees in the staff is their integrity and the ambition to continue performing their duties in a fair and independent manner.
During the ceremony ACC’s Statistic book for 2016 and a white paper related to corruption in elections were released. The white paper is the first of its kind and was named ‘Corruption During Election – Illicit Campaign Financing’. ACC’s quarterly bulleting ‘Bithufangi’ and a book containing a compilation of true stories published weekly in ACC’s website were also released during the ceremony. ACC’s staff with the best attendance, and staff with appraisal rating higher than 90 marks were awarded certificates in the ceremony. The certificates were awarded by the chief guest Auditor General Mr. Hassan Ziyath.
Various activities have been planned to mark this year’s National Anti-Corruption Day which includes a children’s evening in Hulhumale children shelter, Fiyavathi. The evening will consist of games and gifts and donations will be handed over to the children in the shelter. This year’s main activities will be held in Dh. Kudahuvahoo at a later date.
