ACC publishes Corruption Risk Assessment relating to Maldives Customs Service

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has published the research report of the Corruption Risk Assessment of importing goods and services through Maldives Customs Services. The report was published on 17th September 2017, at a ceremony held at Meerubahuru Maalam of Maldives Customs Services. It was launched by Commissioner General of Customs, Mr. Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.

This research which was aimed at Maldives Customs Services was conducted based on the recommendations for some of the cases lodged to the Commission, which suggested further researches in the field. The aim of this research is to ascertain whether the laws and regulations regarding import of goods and services into Maldives are followed accordingly and to investigate further upon the actions taken against perpetrators who import goods and services illegally. The findings of the research highlights issues of illegal imports, the problems faced in importing goods into the country, some organizational issues of Maldives Customs Services and the recommendations by the Commission to these hindrances. These findings are based on the information collected from Maldives Customs Services from 2012 to 2015.

In addition to the Commissioner General of Customs, the Vice Chairperson of ACC, Uz. Muaviz Rasheed and some senior staff of both the institutions attended the ceremony held to publish the report. In his speech, the Commissioner General of Customs stated that they welcome the recommendations by ACC and that they are working to improve the areas highlighted in the research. The Vice Chairperson of ACC also addressed the gathering and thanked Maldives Customs Services and the other institutions for their support and assistance throughout the research. He also indicated that the Commission is working on similar researches which are expected to be published this year. The research report is now published in the Commission’s website.
