After a local media published an article stating that Male’ City Mayor Shifa Mohamed claimed, in a tweet sent out on 18th October 2017, that she was offered a bribe in millions of Maldivian rufiyaa and a 03 room apartment, on terms of switching political parties, the commission had initiated the investigation of the case.
During the investigation of the case, the Mayor was questioned by the Commission about the tweet, where she agreed to have sent out the tweet, but also said that she was unaware of the tweet being published in media, nor was she approached by any journalist or media representative regarding the issue. Answering the Commission’s questions, the Mayor also stated that the purpose of sending out the tweet was to create public awareness regarding such issues recurring in the society and that she had tweeted several such stories in order to create public awareness. Furthermore, she said that it was part of a story she has been writing, the second part of which is to be published later and also mentioned that her tweet does not implicate any political party or individual.
Thereby, in light of the statement given by the Mayor, and as the investigation did not reveal any contravention with the Law number 2/2000 (Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act), the Commission concluded the case on 02nd December 2017, under section 25 (a) (1) of Law number 13/2008 (Anti-Corruption Commission Act) deciding that the matter did not involve any offence of corruption.
